In a heartwarming return to his adopted hometown, former basketball star Donovan Dent is ready to pass on his knowledge and love for the game to the youth of Albuquerque. Dent, a former UNM Lobo and UCLA Bruin, has chosen to settle down in New Mexico, where he now resides with his girlfriend, Katelyn Estrada, an Albuquerque native and UNM med school student.
It's a decision that goes beyond just basketball. Dent, now 22, has decided to hang up his professional playing days and focus on what he truly loves - teaching and training the next generation of basketball players.
"I'm done with pro basketball," Dent declares. "I want to give back to the youth and start training. Albuquerque has given me so much, and I feel it's the perfect place to begin my journey as a trainer."
This shift in focus is not just about Dent's passion for the game but also about his desire to make a difference. With the financial stability gained from his time at UCLA, he can now pursue his long-term goals in the industry, and what better way to start than by helping young athletes develop their skills?
On Monday, Dent will host a skills clinic for kids from third to twelfth grade, offering an opportunity to learn from a former Player of the Year. The clinic, held at ABC Prep gym in Old Town, will focus on ball handling, making reads, and improving overall game performance.
"The main thing we're working on is body control and balance," Dent explains. "It's not about size; it's about how you move and control your body on the court."
Dent's own journey as a player, despite not being highly recruited out of high school, gives him a unique perspective. He believes he can connect with players who may face similar challenges, offering them insights and strategies to excel.
"I want to help them gain an advantage," he says. "It's all about hard work and mastering the fundamentals."
Beyond the clinic, Dent will also lead "The Enchantment" team in the TBT, a winner-take-all basketball tournament. The team, composed primarily of former UNM Lobos, will face off against the defending champions, the AfterShocks, in July.
But why Albuquerque? While Dent's love for the city and his girlfriend's presence are significant factors, one can't help but wonder if there's a bit of the 'Eck Effect' at play. After all, a certain Lobo football upset against Dent's UCLA Bruins might have had something to do with his decision to return.
"She told me I had to come back if the Lobos won," Dent jokes, referring to a friendly wager with his girlfriend.
As Dent embarks on this new chapter, he leaves us with a deeper question: What does it truly mean to give back? For Donovan Dent, it's about sharing his love for the game, inspiring the next generation, and leaving a lasting impact on the community that gave him so much.
