Diego Luna's Fashion Journey: From Actor to Director and Back Again
In the world of fashion and film, few figures embody the seamless blend of talent and style quite like Diego Luna. His journey from actor to director and back again is not just a testament to his versatility but also to his enduring partnership with the Italian luxury house, Zegna. As he steps onto the red carpet at Cannes, not just as an actor but also as a director, Luna's style choices become a fascinating study in personal expression and professional evolution.
A Family Affair at Cannes
Luna's presence at Cannes is a family affair, with his son accompanying him to present his latest directorial effort, 'Ashes'. This marks a significant moment in his career, as he reflects on his first fiction film, 'Abel', which he directed in 2010. The screening of 'Abel' was a deeply personal experience, dedicated to his father, and now, years later, he shares a similar sentiment with his son.
"Yeah, I came in 2010 with the first fiction film I directed [Abel] and my dad came with me. I still remember the whole screening and how important it was for me to share it with him, so much that I dedicated the screening to him. It’s kind of nice to think about how much time has passed and now I’m here with my son. A lot of things have happened for me at this festival."
A Longstanding Partnership with Zegna
Luna's relationship with Zegna is a testament to the brand's enduring appeal and his own commitment to quality. His journey with the brand began nearly 20 years ago when he starred in a Zegna campaign, and it has since evolved into a deep, personal connection.
"We go way back. I found a Zegna campaign from 2007 that I starred in. Yes, I did a campaign for two years, or something close. It was a lot of photo shoots all around. I loved it because at the time, it was so new for me. I got to wear clothes and suits that were custom made and tailored for me, so everything fit like a glove. It was so cool. I even got to go to Italy a lot and meet with Zegna. My photo was everywhere, and my friends used to make fun of me when they saw my face at the bus stop or in subways. My friends sent me so many pictures of them posing in front of me. It was amazing. I wore those suits for a decade of my life."
The Importance of Fit and Comfort
What sets Zegna apart for Luna is the brand's commitment to fit and comfort. The clothes feel like they are made for his body, fitting perfectly without feeling imposing. This is crucial when preparing for a red carpet or a big event, as it ensures he feels confident and at ease.
"It feels very simple. But at the same time, I know how much work goes into making the clothes they make. When you put on Zegna, it feels very easy as if it’s made for your body because it fits so nicely. It doesn’t feel imposing or that it’s taking over you. I don’t have to think too much about it because it’s so comfortable and well-made."
Balancing Style and Professionalism
Luna's approach to style is particularly interesting when he is not acting but directing. He emphasizes the importance of sharing the moment with the whole team and ensuring that everyone blends together. This means that he chooses his outfits with care, ensuring that they are not too outlandish but also not too conservative.
"That’s a style rule I don’t think many people realize. Why is it important to you as a filmmaker not to outshine your actors? It’s about sharing the moment with the whole team and making sure we all blend and look like a team. There’s a time and a place for everything, but this one is a very special moment because it’s very much about the four years of hard work done in collaboration. It should be about the whole team, not any one individual."
Casual Chic with Zegna
When it comes to more casual looks, Luna appreciates Zegna's versatility. The brand offers clothes that work for morning events, easy-going interviews, press junkets, and very dressy events. This allows him to be both simple and monochromatic, which suits his personal style.
"I love having Zegna help me because they make something for every part of the journey. They have clothes that work for morning events, easy going interviews, press junkets and then very dressy events. It can be simple. It can be very monochromatic. I can be a bit boring myself and they have room for people like me."
A Personal Takeaway
As Luna reflects on his journey, he emphasizes the importance of family, personal connections, and the power of shared experiences. His partnership with Zegna is a reflection of these values, as he finds comfort and confidence in the brand's timeless style and commitment to quality. Whether he is acting, directing, or simply enjoying a moment at Cannes, Luna's style choices are a fascinating study in personal expression and professional evolution.
